Donald Trump and the Long-Delayed Million to Veterans

January 28th, 2016

.. The largest donation, a $1 million check dated May 24 and drawn from Donald J. Trump’s personal account

When Trump said that night in Iowa, “I refuse to be called a politician! Donald Trump gave $1 million, okay?’ what he really meant was, “someday, I might give one million, if I get asked about this boast enough by reporters.”

.. And here’s Sean Hannity last night: “Donald Trump is fighting back against liberal media attacks about how much money he has raised and donated to veterans charity groups.”

.. Yes, there are a lot of legitimate conservative complaints about a partisan, unfair, sneering media that reflexively treats them with disdain. But asking a guy who claims to make huge donations to charity for details about his donations isn’t partisan or unfair or disdainful. It’s basic fact-checking.

.. This is how spun we have become; now asking “which charities, and how much, and when?” is now considered a “liberal media attack” because it irks the candidate. Why should those questions be so vexing if the donations have been made? Because it implies Trump lied that night in Iowa? But the reporters were right! Trump hadn’t made the donation!

Bernie Sanders’ surge is partly fueled by veterans

Sanders battled over veterans issues as chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee from 2013 until early this year, giving him an easy pitch to a crucial voting bloc of veterans, particularly in South Carolina where veterans make up more than 11 percent of the voting-aged population. There’s stiff competition for these voters, with front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton wooing them this month during a round table in Nevada.

.. Last summer, the bill fixing wait times at hospitals appeared to be heading for defeat. Faced with possibility that Congress would adjourn without enacting it, Sanders joined forces with John McCain, the Arizona Republican and GOP presidential nominee in 2008.

.. McCain said working with Sanders involved “very stimulating conversations, and the occasional four-letter word.”

.. “He advocates vigorously for what he believes in, and so do I,” McCain said. “I can’t say it was the most enjoyable experience, but it was certainly one of the most interesting.”

.. Veterans are a group long courted by politicians. In the early primary states, New Hampshire is home to 113,000 veterans, Iowa has 226,000, Nevada has 227,000 and South Carolina has 392,000 — according to US Census figures.

Jon Stewart, Iraq War Critic, Runs a Program That Helps Veterans Enter TV

Instead, the staff of “The Daily Show” developed an intense five-week immersion program to give veterans a crash course in their business, with behind-the-scenes looks at areas including talent booking and editing.

They put out word to veterans’ groups but did not mention that the boot camp was at “The Daily Show,” an attempt to weed out fans and focus instead on veterans who really wanted to work in the industry.
