Indiana Gov. Mike Pence on Sunday repeatedly avoided clarifying whether his running mate, Republican nominee Donald Trump, still wants to deport all undocumented immigrants in the United States or only criminals.
In an interview with host Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Pence insisted Trump’s position on immigration has remained consistent. Yet after hearing clips of Trump earlier in the campaign promising to deport all undocumented immigrants, Pence refused to say whether that is still the plan... Pressed by Tapper, Pence said Trump’s call for deportation was “a mechanism, not a policy,”
.. “There will be no change in the principle here,” Pence said. “There will be no path to legalization and no path to citizenship. Donald Trump will articulate what we do with the people who are here.”
.. He waved off stories about domestic violence charges against Trump’s new campaign executive, Breitbart chairman Steve Bannon, saying voters don’t care so much about “process” stories.

When we published our “Against Trump” issue back in January, Rich confidently predicted that Donald Trump couldn’t be trusted even on immigration — his signature issue. “I don’t even believe . . . His suggestion that he would deport only “the bad ones” while letting law-abiding, but undocumented, immigrants stay in the United States is quite similar to the approach announced by Mr. Obama in November of 2014, when he directed the Department of Homeland Security to prioritize its immigration enforcement on violent criminals and people who have repeatedly violated immigration laws by crossing the border multiple times.
.. The statement about payment of “back taxes” in Mr. Hannity’s Wednesday night broadcast is very similar to the president’s “deferred action” proposals, which would have required millions of immigrants in the country illegally to pay taxes, among other things, in exchange for legal protections.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio suffers another defeat in profiling case
U.S. District Court Judge Murray Snow on Friday ordered another judge to rule on whether Joe Arpaio, the Republican sheriff of Arizona’s Maricopa County, and a deputy should be held in criminal contempt of court for repeatedly ignoring court orders to stop racially profiling Latinos.
.. Two years later, Snow found that Arpaio had intentionally flouted his order, citing the sheriff’s own public comments, such as a 2012 interview with Fox News in which he declared, “I’m not stopping anything” and said he was “not going to bend to the federal government.”
.. Arpaio’s opponent in the Aug. 30 Republican primary is Dan Saban, a former local police chief who ran against him in 2004 and 2008. During their 2004 race, Arpaio opened an investigation into Saban for allegedly raping his own adoptive mother decades earlier. The case was dropped, and Saban sued Arpaio unsuccessfully for defamation.
.. In June, Penzone likewise threatened to sue Arpaio if he recycled ads from their 2012 contest, when the sheriff accused him of beating his ex-wife.
