Why one editor won’t run any more op-eds by the Heritage Foundation’s top economist

A reply to Paul Krugman on state taxes and job growth made some incorrect claims

Please see editor’s note at the top of this column. No-income-tax Texas gained 1 million jobs over the last five years, California, with its 13 percent tax rate, managed to lose jobs. Oops. Florida gained hundreds of thousands of jobs while New York lost jobs. NOTE: These figures are incorrect. The time period covered was December 2007 to December 2012. Over that time, Texas gained 497,400 jobs, California lost 491,200, Florida lost 461,500 and New York gained 75,900. Oops.

Calculating Linear Regression Coefficients in SQL

The basic regression analysis uses fairly simple formulas to get a “best fit” line through your data. We are going to be specifically looking at simple regression analysis.

Businesses love regression analysis because it gives you powerful tools to do forecasting. You can forecast sales and revenue targets, retention rates, etc.

The Four Wrong Numbers Behind Trump’s Immigration Ban

The White House is using iffy figures and suspect logic to justify its restrictions on travel from several Muslim-majority countries.

Last year, nearly 23,000 refugees entered the U.S. between February and June; none will be able to enter now. The Department of State issued just under 95,000 immigrant and visitor visas in fiscal year 2016 to residents of Iraq, Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, and Yemen; people from those countries are now specifically barred from visiting the United States.

.. “For the amount of money Hillary Clinton would like to spend on refugees, we could rebuild every inner city in America,”

.. Factoring in population, the United States drops to No. 75 in the world when it comes to sheltering refugees

.. only 20 refugees have ever been convicted of committing or attempting terrorism within the U.S., according to an analysis by the Cato Institute. That’s out of 3.25 million refugees who have been admitted into the country, or .0006%.

.. In his response to Cruz, an Obama administration official said that most Christian Syrians live in areas protected by the Assad regime or have decamped to Lebanon

Wonderful News: the Abortion Rate Keeps Dropping, Lower and Lower

Sometimes good news comes along and it seems like almost no one notices:

The abortion rate in the US has fallen to its lowest level since Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure, a new report finds.

The report, by the Guttmacher Institute, found the rate has declined to 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women of, what is considered, childbearing age (that’s 15 to 44). That’s the lowest rate recorded since the landmark Supreme Court decision in 1973.

Another notable finding: the annual number of abortions in the US has dropped to under 1 million for the first time since the mid-1970s. It reached its peak of more than 1.6 million abortions in 1990.

.. There appeared to be no correlation between the number of clinics and abortion rates.

The number of clinics in the Midwest declined 22% during the study period, for instance, while the abortion rate in that region declined 9%.

In the Northeast, however, the number of clinics increased 14% and the abortion rate declined 11% between 2011 and 2014.
