How come modern-day Virginia is so different from the other former Confederate States?

The Confederacy never went away. The only thing that’s changing is the states that belong to it as people migrate. Virginia went from solid red to blue in a matter of a few years. Really, really fast. Texas is trying to avoid that, currently, but will ultimately fail. They’re ONE power grid failure away (now) from turning totally Democratic. The Confederacy, now, without any risk of flipping, is comprised of:

  • Florida (again)
  • South Carolina (again)
  • Alabama (again)
  • Mississippi (again)
  • Louisiana (again)
  • Arkansas (again)
  • Tennessee (again)
  • Oklahoma
  • Kansas
  • Missouri
  • Iowa
  • Indiana
  • Ohio
  • West Virginia
  • Kentucky
  • Nebraska
  • South Dakota
  • North Dakota
  • Idaho
  • Wyoming
  • Utah
  • Alaska

All the rest of the states are either solidly American or turning American.
