Multi-resolution blog template

In late 2006, A List Apart had an article about "Adaptive Layout", which they described as an improvement over liquid CSS layouts because it is optimized for multiple screen resolutions and adjusts automatically.

I was intrigued, so I decided to experiment with an adaptive blog template that automatically adjusts itself to different screen resolutions, from an iPhone to a 1920x1200 monitor.

The result isn't very "polished", but I finally got around to posting my own "adaptive blog layout", which uses javascript to tell the browser to use a different body css class, depending upon the reader's screen resolution.

Future Improvements

The template could be improved by paying better attention to the most common browser resolutions and developing grid-based versions tailored to specific resolutions. I did the opposite -- I started with the content and defined CSS rules to fit my text and images.

The darker side of Pinax

Pinax does a completely kick ass job of making a combined and base project that pulls together a lot of pretty darn good re-usable django “applications” into a single project. What it doesn’t do well is manage any of the dependencies in that tree, or make it easy to use only a portion of some app. If you want to use Pinax the way Pinax is already developed, you’re rockin’. If not, you’re re-working quite a bit of code. And the worst part is that code is almost all opaque to you and hidden in the pinax framework.

Ideas only take 30 seconds of work

Sensationalism & Oversimplification at the WSJ

In any case, it’s clear from the photograph and the two main stories on the WSJ’s front page that the paper is aggressively becoming both sensationalist and political. That might be a sensible move, from the point of view of selling copies, especially on the newsstand. But it will also inevitably serve to erode the trust that many people, on Wall Street especially, have in the reporting of the WSJ.
