An idiot’s guide to DevOps

VentureBeat: What is meant by this term “agile development”? Do you use it to refer simply to speed?

George: Simply put, it means a lot more iterations: releasing updates to the product early and often. Instead of worrying about making something that is absolutely perfect, let’s just get it out there. It’s that concept of the “perpetual beta” — let’s do quick sprints, develop in 30-day chunks, and see what people think. Agile literally means being able to change quickly.

.. DevOps is for anyone who wants to be more nimble. In my opinion, it’s a way for IT to gain relevancy. I see IT being relegated to one side, with the purse strings held by the business team. [With DevOps] IT can assert themselves earlier in the process

Let me distinguish two different kinds of joiners. You have people who will join a movement and be totally gung-ho about it. That’s great. We need the cheerleaders.

But that’s merely a form of tribalism. What we also try to encourage are the kind of joiners who join many things. These people are like the intersection in a Venn diagram, who like to be at the intersection of two different tribes. In an actual tribal situation, these are the merchants, who go back and forth between tribes and actually produce an economy. In theological terms we call them peacemakers.

But in a sense I am still a missionary. I kind of consider myself an apostle to the hackers.

Let’s Build a More Secure Internet

But there is a third kind of freedom inherent in open-source systems: the freedom to audit. With open-source software, independent security experts can scrutinize the code for vulnerabilities — whether accidentally or intentionally introduced. The more auditing by the programming masses, the better the security.

.. To make the Internet less susceptible to mass surveillance, we need to recreate the physical layer of its infrastructure on the basis of open-source principles.
